Bugs

Submitted by Larson on 1/23/06 at 3:21 PM. ( ) 12.106.25.202

I was out to the cabin this past week end and guess what? I have bugs. Nasty little turds have infested at least 2 of my mounts. Both have the tell tale little larvea cases on them. Thank God they're not in my studio. One, a blue goose is pretty much destroyed, so I hung it out on the porch, and it will probably get burned this spring. The other is just a gray fox skin. Oh well, all the mounts at the cabin are pretty old ones that I was thinking about replacing anyway. Its winter now so I will need to wait till spring to bomb the cabin. Any sugestions on what to use. I know I will need to do it a number of times to make it work. I just want to get rid of them what ever it takes. Its not like anyone uses the cabin most of the year until the duck season anyway. At this point I sure dont want to take anything thats out at the cabin home in fear of transporting them into the studio which is attached to my house. It is funny though the birds that I used borax on seam untouched, where as the one I used dry preserve is infested.

Thanks

Best go ahead and bomb your cabin now. If it is where they can proliferate or survive.. they will get into everything you have including leather goods. I can't think of the name of it but the best thing I have used is from Walmart and comes in a three or four pack, orange and the bombs are small. I believe it is a RAID product. No greasey residue and get MOST insects. I have found it works for a long time. Good luck

Even in winter?

Forrest Sue

Your prablably right. Im in Minnesota and I just thought that since its winter it wouldnt have much of a effect but what the hell, what do I have to loose. I'll go ahead and do it now and then do it again in a couple months. At one time I used to bomb every time when we would leave after a week end. It looks like I should start that again.

What did you use to preserve these mounts? Borax is a natural Bug proofer, that is why the bugs have not touched them. DP at least most versions have Powdered borax in them. unless you use Van Dykes DP that advertises No Borax.

Well, if insects died each year and didn't leave eggs, larvae or "hibernate" we probably would only have to kill them once and there would be no more. I guess for most the life cycle would be about 6 weeks.. maybe its not the lifecycle I am thinking of, but anyway, if my cats leave me a present of fleas I have to bomb again in 6 weeks.... Luckily I haven't had THAT gift ina couple of years......

Your not talking to a new taxidermist but I am new to bug problems, because for whatever reason it hasnt been a problem until now. Its just that I thought that since the cabin isnt heatet all winter that it may be a waste of time to bomb until it warms up considering that eggs arent effected much.

For the previous poster B
As I recall that dry preserve I used on the infected bird was the Van Dykes, or at least I got it from them, I cant remember. The borax birds havent been effected that I can see.

I haven't had any bugs in my mounts, shop, or house,(fingers crossed) but that maybe because I am such a fanatic about NOT getting fleas. I would have to look on one of those cans but it may be the kind that affects FLEA eggs/larvae. Don't know of any effects it may have on OTHER type eggs/larvae. The only thing I have continual problem with in house is spiders. But then they are not insects so....
I would give it a shot in cabin. Like you said what can it hurt? And you are in Minnesota? I haven't been up in your "neck of the woods".
