Hey there, I forgot to clean out the wrist area of a Cackler one time and I thaught I was gonna have to pitch it. Instead after realizing my mistake a day or two later I injected it with preservzit and the smell was gone overnite. Hope this helps.
Your eider smells like fish because he's been eating clams, mussels, barnacles and oysters all his life. If you ate that much fish you would smell like one too.
The odor should go away after a month or so if it was properly cleaned.
Next time, try mixing in a little baby powder with your borax or preservative. It does nothing to remove the odor but your bird will smell like a baby's butt and you won't think about the fish smell as much.

As a father of 4 boys, I like your explanation of why to use the baby powder. I put a container of it on my shop table today to use on my next eider/seaduck/merganser. Thanks for the tip Paul. Keep ut the good work. By the way, your goldeneye mount is still one of my faves.
