Shipping birds Part 2

I then made a box out of luan and 2x2's that fit in a cardboard box like a glove The rock base was screwed to the bottom of the luan box and shipped.The rock is fine the hen is fine, but the drake is in a position that a duck cant naturaly be in. What did I do wrong. Was it the word FRAGILE I wrote on all 4 sides of the box. I shipped it UPS was that the problem. Any help will be greaty appreciatd Thanks Brent

You didn't mention in the previous post whether you anchored the leg wires under the base...if you just poured some resin downt the holes that might hold for a "normal" customer pick up...but shipping is another matter. They have to be made solid...I anchor everything and use the heaviest guage wire possible. These boxes get dropped, kicked, turned upside down, etc....I do not use p-nuts as Geo suggested...I've seen some messed up feathers from those. I just screw the base to the bottom of the box...if the mount needs more support, I'll insert a sharpened wire into the body and anchor that wire, sometimes 2 of them to the side of the box to keep the mount from moving. It's generally a money losing part of the process as I spend a lot of time on the crate/box. I no longer use UPS after going with DHL...I have not had a problem with them in 2 years of shipping mounts. They also have a slightly larger overall box size than the others.
