Pheasant neck feathers

Submitted by Ron on 2/23/06 at 9:12 AM. ( ) 65.16.183.162

I am thawing a pheasant and noticed a pattern of no feathers on each side of the back of the neck in about a 10 and 2 position. I thought it might be damage but each side is a mirror image of the other. Each area with no feathers is about 1/2" x 3" when parted. If I manipulate the feathers, I can get about 90% coverage. Is this damage or just a natural area with no feathers. Thanks for your responses.

When you skin the bird, there are lots of areas where there are no feathers. You are seeing natural feather tracts

when you wash the bird

and it is soaking wet, it will look like a mexican hairless. it is suprising when you first see it, it looks ruined, but when dried and fluffed, the feathers will cover it.
