A friend gave me five Geese today and I have never done birds. I have skinned a couple; therefore, I am comfortable with this portion. However, I want to save freezer space. I am waiting on my bird flesher, and I am considering skinning all of the birds now, tucking the heads inside the body and freezing them without degreasing. They would be in the freezer for a maximum of four months. Is this going to hurt the skins? If so, please help! Thanks, John.

The key to success is in the wraping. Once the birds are skinned put flesh to flesh and wrap as tightly as you can in a large plastic bag - remove as much air as possible. Tape with masking tape. Then place in a second bag and do the same thing. Mark the outside to remind you what is in there and the date and time. If you are a taxidermist you will need to put all the other information on there as well. I wash my birds and freeze them wet - even before degreasing. I find I can pack them tighter when they are wet. I also have a home vaccum packer and I vaccum pack them. They have stayed fine in this way for years. Good luck.
