Hard Time

v, I think your holding your mouth wrong (just kidding).

I have a little trouble also. Ya just need to work it and you'll get the hang of it. I try and bring it on the bottom side and cheat a lttle towards the back side of the joint.

Good luck, and watch your hand. Those wires hurt. Don't ask me how I know that.

Pat

PS: Do you sharpen your wire? If not that will help. Also hurts more.

thanks

You guys are stickin yourselves with the wire?
I learned my lesson when I ran the wire right through my hand....all the way through.
I now use my cordless drill once I get the wire started to help get it pushed through.
As for the holding the mouth part right ,,, I ususally stick my tongue out a lil bit LOL...
Hope this will help you guys and save you a trip to the ER someday.
Jeff

wiring wings

I don't shove the wing support wire all the way threw. I bend the support wire about as long as the radius/ulna. I then use a very thin wire (20 ga) to wrap the wing support wire either to the ulna or radius bone, bending the support wire at the humerous bone and keep wrapping up to the end of the bone. I then finish by wrapping the 20 ga wire a few times around the support wire at the end of the bone.

Stefan Savides has a great way to mount the wing. He was here in Norway last summer when we had a taxidermy convention here and I learn a great deal of new things about mounting flying and tips on standing birds.
There are som free downloads on http://www.rmi-online.com
somewere there is some hints on wings!

Cordless Drill oops!

This response submitted by Pat-m on 3/14/06 at 10:21 AM. ( ) 160.136.109.100

Jeff, I tried the cordless drill also. I almost always use some cotton batting to fill out my birds as I sew them up. I was drilling the wire through and it ended up catching the cotton batting. The batting wrapped around the wire I was drilling with and the next thing I knew it had ripped the side of the ducks carcass. Had to do some more sewing.

Just wondered if you ever had that happen.

This is working

I bent the tip of the wire slightly, a few mm behind the sharpend point. more back I bent the wire to the opposit side in a ,L, shape. When you insert the wire you have the point facing the bone, so it can,t go through the skin. The L bend you hold in your hand and give you a indication where your tip is pointing. Carefull twisting and you can ,,feel,, the bone and you can find the tip of the wing quit easily. For bigger birds I even bring in a wire for the thumb.
