Bird feet

Submitted by Patrick L. on 3/14/06 at 7:43 PM. ( ) 69.95.138.217

I started a gw teal last night and i didn't think i was going to finish it, but it went quick so i did, its all mounted and the leg wires are ran through the legs. i've never injected the feet or legs of a duck before (i've only done a couple) and i have some fluid on order from Van Dykes but they take forever to get it to me. my question is can i inject the legs after the leg wires are in or am i just waisting my time? and also how much time do i have before their too dry to inject?

thanks

You know what guys
a lot of hype goes into injecting bird feet and legs
if you don't inject them with ANYTHING they will be just fine
I have 20 year mounts to prove it

Do you want quality ?

It's not about longevity, it's about appearance in my opinion. I have bird legs that I did not inject that are 20 yrs. old also. But you put them beside a pair that has been injected and see which looks better and more realistic. No comparison! To answer your question.. Yes, you do inject them after the leg wires are inserted. You can prolong the time until you inject them by keeping the legs moist and flexible. You can wrap a damp reg or paper towel around them and then wrap in plastic. I would not do it longer than a couple of days.

you dont have to inject the feet on birds. but you also dont have to flesh them, or wash them or clean the skull, or paint the natural bill, or use a cast head, etc.

Thanks KS

refrigerator. or maybe someone on this site can tell you if you could put it in the freezer for a few days, with the legs wrapped and kept wet. I have read posts from people who will mount a bird and stick it in the freezer for a couple days until the are able to pose it. not sure how well this works or if there are any problems...maybe some of the experienced guys could answer that.

You are not alone!

I also ordered some bird feet injection fluid from Van Dykes. It has been well over a month and still no show!
