Hi
Just wanted to get some opinions..we had a customer bring a woodie into the shop last week..He requested to have the duck posed with cupped wings as though the duck was coming in for a landing..no big deal there, but he also requested that the duck have a turn to it as though it were changing directions..this to me seems a bit conflicting and I haven't been able to find a reference pic to match this pose. Seems to me that if a duck was coming in for a landing, it would be straight on-no turn...I'm sure this could happen, say if something would startle the duck he might turn to change directions but if that was the case..both wings wouldn't still be cupped, atleast one would have to be up in the air..
Maybe I'm over analyzing this, I spend alot of time watching my own birds in their flight pen and this just doesn't strike me as a natural pose and I'm unsure how to go about mounting a bird with cupped wings and a turn to it without it looking odd..
Any thoughts or reference pics would be appreciated..?
Thanks
Tj

I routinely mount my birds that way. Woodies, especially, landing in thick undergrowth will twist and weave as they settle in. I tilt the body 15-20 degrees and then turn the head vertical so it looks as if he's made that very last adjustment before plopping down. It adds a lot of "life" to a mount to do it that way.
has a picture on page 6 of Mike Nakielski's wood duck that he did With a alot of twist to it. The head is parallel to the floor and the wings are perpendicular. If you don't have a copy and want to see it post here and I will scan a copy and send it to you.
like to see that picture if you would not mind sending it to me.
thanks
Yes Todd, I would like a pic if possible..
George, you mount the head in a vertical position..? Do you have a pic of that..?
Thanks
TJ
is what George was getting at. Regardless of the banked position the duck's head will stay level from left to right. They don't roll thier heads with their bodies. Mike had that bird at the IL show last weekend and it's really nice!
