American Coot

I am in Ohio. A friend came to me with an American Coot and wants it mounted. I checked the ODNR website and I could not find anything on them except that they are NOT on the Ohio endangered bird list. Can I mount it or should I tell him to get rid of it?

The coot is a legal to possess and mount but you need to know the federal migratory bird regulations. Because coots are migratory they come under federal regs. States also enforce federal regs but do not usually list them under the state regs banner. To do migratory bird taxidermy (on huntable species) you should have a federal mig bird taxidermy permit. You should also tag this coot with
the owners name, address, date/place killed and hunting license info.
Do a search here on USFW migratory bird regulations, coots and CFR50.
There is a lot of info to read and you need to know this stuff if you want to mount ducks, geese, woodcock etc.

Thanks
