Does anyone know the process and number that can be called to get certified by the USDA to accept imports like birds from south america? Don't know the number I need to call nor the best approach to go about it so looking for some tips and points in the right direction.

Thanks,

Eric

www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ncie and scroll down to the general information list and click the last one - USDA area veternarian. Keep trying, some are quick and helpful, others can be sloooowwww or completely unresponsive.

state veternarian office, they will send you a form (16-25) and set up an appointment with a inspector to come to your shop, call him first so you know what he wants to see and have done. You must have a set up to quareenteen horns, skins, skulls etc in a seperate area that is caged in and locked. Also a "approved" boiling area. First year is 385.00 and 200. every year afterward. Its best to have everything sent to a place that is already set up unless you intend to go big time over a long period of time. Most places charge about 140.00 service fee to handle such things per shipment order and its cheaper and easier in the long run. Birds have additional special rules and paperwork to do. Most bird skins can not be imported no matter what, esp. since the new rules set in place Jan. 1st of this year.

Just went through this, it's pretty much as Jim Says.
Be aware (and this was news to me) you must also apply
to USFW, enforcement division, for their import/export permit!
Another $100.00!

You are correct except...

Your first year of approval is $385.00 and the following 2 years are $200.00 or so but then the process starts over again and you must reapply after the third year and pay the $385.00 again. Sorry but that is the way it is. The US fish and Wildlife permit is necessary only if you are importing trophies for other people or are buying skins for commercial use. Be careful because if someone else is using your import/export permit and they do something that is illegal then you are held responsible.

What new rules?
