turkey brought in with 3 extra loose tail feathers! customer said they were on the ground where bird died, I cant find a empty socket for them. Is there a definant number of tail feathers on a eastern wild turkey? or is someone wanting an extra large tail for free? Thanks for any help! Ron

There are 18 on the Easterns I mount.
18 or 20 is common. It sounds to me like the guy just wants a large fan, possibly from having seen a less than good looking mounted bird in the past. He most likely has no idea that you can see from the quill sockets that these arent from his bird.
Ron, I have seen a few with 19, otherwise all of the rest had 18.
If theres such a thing as normal in nature, lol, when they have extra tail feathers, its in pairs, one to a side, thus the even number. No rules, just that tendency.
Thanks to all you Pro's for taking the time to answer we less knowageables questions, BIG Thanks Ron
