That was the only way before they invented the wheel (Sick pun, I know.)
When I first started ducks I used the scissors method and the old wire wheel in the electric drill trick. I thought I was doing a good job until I finally broke down a bought the flesher. Now I can't imagine doing it any other way.
Get the larger one so you can do turkeys if you want to. You won't regret it.
