Mixed birds in an aviary

Submitted by Zaheer on 6/17/06 at 4:26 PM. ( zmtee@yahoo.com ) 202.133.64.52

I am planning a small aviary (15 feet X 5 feet - 4 feet high open area [netted] with approx 5 X 5 ft sheltered area). Can I keep one or two varieties of game birds black and grey francolins and/or chukar with some parakeet/cuckatoos etc. One group stays on ground and the others on 'highjer elevations'.

Thanks

Zaheer

Had an aviary...

... with quail and many types of finches and seed keets(Australian Bourkes). They all did fine together. I would be concerned with larger birds, such as the cockatoo or any other parrot type birds. They have bigger, harder bills and are very inquisitive. I would be concerned of the safety for the soft billed, smaller birds. Do keep in mind, I don't care where you live, an outdoor aviary will attract mice. They feed on the readily available seed that will spill on the ground. That is the reason I sold my birds and donated the aviary. I was concerned when Hantivirus became prevelant in Northern Az.

You should have no trouble with some of them, stay away from chuckars. The pen is not large enough for ringneck pheasants, but a pair or trio of bobwhites or valley quail should do OK with your smaller birds. Red golden pheasants are the least agressive pheasants and do well in that small of a pen, so they should be ok too. Still, don't overload the pen. Good Luck. Feel free to call.
