I was looking at a turkey mount that has been completed for about 7 months now & I noticed what appeared to be some fine shavings in the base that came from under the wings. I shook the wings out good & found what appeared to be brown worm skins or skin sheds like a snake skin. I couldn't find any worms or bugs on it though & there aren't any on another turkey mount right beside it. Does anyone know what these are?

It looks like you didnt get all the meat out and the moths attacked it . Those are the larval skin from the moth caterpillars . I would suggest you put the whole bird in a chest freezer , if you can ,to kill wantever else is on it . You can bet you now have moths eating all your stuff . Rick
I spray Ortho Home Defense through out my entire basement, show room area once a month. This will kill any tipe of insects that can or will get into your mounts. But you should get all of the meat out of your specimans. Sound more like you have dermasteds. You can all so shoot formaldehyde in them areas were your having trouble getting the meat out. But not healthy to breathe.
I found one in one of my blue ribbons that was hanging on my showroom wall. It's a small brown worm about 3/8" long & has some hair looking fuzz or something on it. It had eaten a hole in my ribbon & it was still in there. I got a fogger & set it off in my shop earlier today. Maybe that will work. Does anyone know what these are?
Terry , e mail me as I have something you can use to get rid of the moths , well most of them . Rick

Terry,
Sounds like you might have a case of Dermestid beetles. I had a friend get them in his turkey mount. The leave almost like a dust granule behind and the "brown worm about 3/8" long & has some hair looking fuzz" Sounds like one of the larva. Dermestids have a 7 or 9 phases of larva before maturing into the beetle. If you can put your mount in the Freezer for a couple days. Then bomb your house. Raid makes a bomb that will kill the Dermestid or Carpet beetle. Then you can remove your mount from the Freezer and this should kill any lingering larva that might be in your mount. These pesky beetles will eat the splines of your feathers in half and your feathers will just break off. Hope this helps you.
Sincerely,
Kimberly
