My first time sending mounted waterfowl

Submitted by Doug on 7/4/06 at 3:28 PM. ( ) 67.1.101.119

I'm sending a mounted goose from Iowa to Texas. The goose is cupped and commited hanging on fishing line. The biggest box I could get through the shipping companies was 48x34x24" which is a very tight squeeze. The cheapest cost to send is through DHL for 67$ or 117$ with insurance. I guess what I'm looking for with you guys is any precautions I should be taking, is building a wood frame for the box a must? I suppose it would be best to put the bird in a big plastic bag and then pack peanuts all around. As you can tell I'm quite nervous sending this as I don't trust any sending companies as I've seen how they handle there boxes. I imagine if I write fragile on the box it will get punted in the back of the truck. Thanks for any advice.

We shipped full strut turkeys without wrapped plastic...just lots of peanuts.

Dunno know about the emence wing span for your goose.

I ran across my frist receipt for a whitetal shipment from Colorado to Chiago, ILL...went by bus for $17.80 in 1984 with 200 insurance.

A box of that size is going to get tipped on end and maybe rolled around, at least it might if it were on my FedEx truck. You can write fragile, but don't expect it to be read or heeded. Make sure you pack it so the contents can't move, that's really the most important thing. If you do build a crate, belt sand the corners and leave no nails or staples exposed. I guarantee rough handling on any box that bites me. A bigger box will get handled better, i.e. two people to fork lift only size, that will get you into trucking company type service, not really applicable here but food for thought.

The best on box/crate writing is "top load only". Most handlers will recognize this and use it to build the bottom layer of a pallet. Sometimes, not always.
