Has anyone here every mounted chickens? I have some jungle fowl and longtails I plan on mounting and was wondering if anyone had any advice. I know to make surethey are fully mature with no pin feathers, but beyond that Icould really use any pointers you might have. Ive never mounted anything before but I have been reading every book I can get ahold of.
One big question is how do you all dispatch your critters?

Chickens are pretty straight forward. They skin easily and what little fat there is, easily comes off, most with the fingers alone. As far as dispatching one, there's really only one way in my book: electrocution. Take an extension cord and cut the receptacle off. Split the two wires. Find a store that sells insulated alligator clips and attach one to each of those two wires. When you get your bird, clip one clip to its anus. Put the other clip inside the beak and clip it on to the soft "lip" tissue. Hold the bird by its legs and plug the cord into a live receptacle. Leave it in for 15 seconds.
The bird never flops and will contract on the induction of electricity. When you unplug the cord, it will relax completely. No muss no fuss, just don't touch the alligator clips while the cord is connected.
mounted one but I want to. Tony Finazzo had a real nice one at our state show a few years ago. They look real neat when they are done.
That's an interesting way of taking care of the bird. I have always found that if you lay the bird on its side with the wings up then you can rest one knee on the breast of the bird put some weight on it and then the bird can't breathe and it dies that way. I have done many like this. I can't imagine trying to use the cord set up. I would think they would be trying to get away from you when you are trying to hook them up.
That's just my 2 Cents worth .GG
Grab any bird by both legs and hold it head down. They settle down quickly. No stress on the bird as suffocation does. Quick and quiet. You're likely going to hear one short squawk when you plug it in from the lungs contracting, but that's it. Stefan Savides suggested this way a couple years back. Once you use it, you'll never try any other way.
for child molesters and wife beaters?
I agree with the electrocution method, although I refuse to hold the bird while it is being done. No way, no how! I have been shocked too many times in ways that weren't supposed to be possible. (Yes, I know how electricity works. Normally.) I just tie the birds to wire loops attached to an overhead beam, using strips of T-shirt around their legs, hook them up, and then plug in the cord from a safe distance away. The one squawk they make is due to a seizure caused by the current.
As for chickens being easy ... good grief, George!? Where did you find such easy chickens? The ones I have done have been tougher to skin than almost any other bird. Those suckers could have been plucked and made into boots! And not dress boots, either!
They were older roosters in beautiful plumage, but man were they nightmares to work with.
I couldnt sufficate one, it doesnt kill them fast enough. I want it to be instant, the least amount of pain for them and the least amount of "EEKKK factor" for me. So I guess Ill hang them over a beam and use the alligator clips.
Ive spoken with Stevan about birds, and he told me I needed to practice doing a few chickens or whatever before I attend his course. I plan on doing a red jungle fowl, and a longtail once they get full plummage. I have a barn full of birds that are turning out real nice. Funny, I usually raise them for breeding now I am eyeing them for who has the prettiest and longest feathers for mounting LOL... Poor things havent got a clue LOL

put them in a cardboard box sealed then make a very small hole then spray starter fluid leave for ten min,s wrape them up in plastic and in the freezer i think this is the best way
to agree with you Nancy. I just mounted my first chicken and that thing was also as tough as a boot. Not looking forward to any more of those things. LOL
Complaining because the skin on a chicken is TOUGH. Nancy, quail and doves I can understand complaints. But CHICKENS. Please. They wheel especially easy and wash up nice and clean Wings open well to get all the way to the tips. I'll take a chicken any day over those quail you and Jon were doing. LOL
Guess I should rephase. It was kinda nice not to have to worry about burning holes, but that membrane that's on the skin is really tough to get off. Guess I just lumped it all together. The one I did was harder to flesh than a turkey. LOL
