rehydrating freezer burn

Submitted by Kirk on 8/13/06 at 7:25 PM. ( ) 68.96.140.183

I have a goose that I'm sure is freezer burnt. I was going to inject it to try and save. I've read about using water with some Dawn to "increase the wetting ability" and I've read about using a 50:50 mix if water and lysol. I'd guess the lysol is for the disinfection properties? What are your thoughts about using the water/lysol mix with some Dawn?

Thanks, Kirk

This past week I mounted some ducks and geese I had in the freezer for 12 or more years. I never took time for my own mounts. They were freezer burnt to say the least. The night before I thawed them in water with ultra soft. I probably used 1/2 cup of ultra soft to 2 gallons of water. The next morning I could not believe what Happened. Everything was fine except the last joint in the wings. I injected the last joint with stop rot, I had no problem mounting them .

Were these birds skinned or whole while you soaked them to thaw them? Email me.

They were frozen whole. I really do not know if that was the right way to thaw them, but I know it worked. I have used this method on freezer burnt deer capes and also on whole bobcats so I tried it on birds and it worked for me. ( I emailed you Tom)
