Wings

Any thoughts on whether attaching the wings on chuckers and pheasants for standing mounts. Should they be wired to the form or pinned from the outside until they dry? Thanks Ken

to use string (preferably wax)thread will break. I drill a hole in the humorous bone at the head, run a string through it, tie it off and put a dab of hot glue to hold the knot. then I take a 6" needle and use it to thread the string through the form from the attachment point on the form and out the breast. Once both are done, pull the string from the breast side til the bones just touch the body.To tight and it will give you a fit trying to posistion the wing. Tie it off at the breast and hot glue.

This will give you a nice attachment

Just a choice

Options

There certainly are a lot of options on wing attachment. Like Tony, I wire the wings using small guage wire. I prefer this method as it gives you many more options on wing placement and adjustment. It also allows you to taxi the skin as required after the wing is wired. Pining a wing restricts the skin movement significantly. It also has a tendency to compress the wing too tight against the body reducing the plump appearance generally desired. As with all methods it comes down to personal preference and what works best for you. Make sure that you use annealed wire without memory - it stays where you put it. Also remember that manikin anatomy is important - many manikins do not adequately account for the wing bone placement particulatly if you leave the head of the humerous bone on. Good luck.
