woodduck eye rings?

Submitted by Jim A. on 10/8/99. ( ) 209.49.255.162

Has anyone used Joe Ferebee woodduck eye rings? I am about to mount my first two woodducks, I have mounted several types of waterfowl but never woodies. Do I have to replace the red rings around the eyes with artificial or can I skin them out as usual and use the real thing? Any precautions or prep work to the rings themselves? Thanks gang. P.S. I do use artificial heads F.Y.I.

I've used Ferebee's eye rings

And they worked great. I've also had good results with Cooper's Flex Eyes, on both artificial and natural skulls. The natural rings dry out, shrink and have to be rebuilt anyway. I set my eyes with apoxie-sculpt, glue on the eyerings, and mount as usual. Then using a needle tool, tuck the natural eyelid behind the eye ring. You can glue the skin with a little super glue, if you want.

Eyerings

Jim,
I agree with Greg, but of all the beautiful work Joe has produced, his eyerings are at the bottom of the scale. First, they are semitransparent red plastic (You have to paint them yellow on the hens) and they are seldom matched. Some are thin on one side and thick on the others. Woodducks around here have ORANGE rings instead of the red that is sold, anyway. For commercial work, I use the flex eye. For show work I would suggest using the flex eyes and Dremeling out the backs. Then place a 10mm red glass eye in and clay the backside to hold it. For competition work, nothing beats the woodduck heads and eye capsules sold by Positive Reproductions in Alaska. They cost almost 3 times as much, but they come as close to lifelike as you are going to get.

George, I could easily ask for this on chat but I think the majority of folks reading this thread can benefit also, so here goes. Does "Positive Reproductions " have a web or email address that we can inquire for their catalog/price lists. Thanks in advance,Chuck

Chuck,
If they have an e.mail address, I don't know it. Robert Holshouser can be reached at P.O. Box 771884, Eagle River AK 99577-1844 or you can call Positive Reproductions at (907)696-0526. He has several styles of wood duck drake heads, so be sure you tell him you want the glass eyes in his eye capsule along with a matching head.
