Hey George, can you snopes this for me? I cant seem to navigate the SNOPES site.
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and
Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order
that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again and
only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.
When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot
it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton.
If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he
replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the
inmates were in his jails in the first place.
More on the Arizona Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees
just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates
living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail
have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on
their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the
Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their
chests and dripped down to their pink socks.
"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has
lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago
started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not
one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's
120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to
wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your
Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be
a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for
their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and
commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers
money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Don't have time to Snopes it, but if I remember correctly "yes" it is true. But some of the stats are a bit embellished to make the story a bit more interesting...
My hat's off to this guy. I have read about him before and whole heartedly agree with his policies and the way he treats his prisoners. The problem in our judicial system is that most "prisoners" have it better on the inside than they do on the streets. There is no detterence to keep them out of jail and living off of our dollar! We need more "jailhouses" like this one.
And, for the record, it was 123 yesterday over here in Iraq, and we had a bad sand storm. Not much fun, but at least I am getting paid for it. Great Post!
And please don't tell me you're one of those bleeding hearts who think "prisoner" and "pamper" should be together. The story is true about Joe and if a few more Americans had the balls to treat convicted PRISONERS as they deservered, maybe we wouldn't have so many REPEAT prisoners. I particularly like the pink underwear and outerwear. About time the VICTIMS of crime got some satisfaction.
...he always has my vote! Nothing is embellished, he is the real deal. I am one of many Phoenicians who are proud to have him as Sheriff of our county!
There's a few minor details as I mentioned that cannot be confirmed along with a couple of items that aren't true - the coffee thing was cut out to keep the prisoners from potentially burning a guard with the coffee, not for the reasons stated above.
As I said, for the most part it is indeed true, but there are a handful of items added to make the story more interesting...
His county is the ONLY county on the border that is incarcerating illegals to the chagrin of some liberals. After serving their time in the tent city they get a free ride back to Mexico. The incarceration is a deterent to them coming back to America. My only question is, "Is it really that tough in the camp compared to life in some parts of Mexico?"
..and your point is? Who cares? Where do you live? The bottom line is the "man" gets the job done! If you believe "everything" you read in the media, I am sorry! What is the validity of your little "snopes" site?! I live here in the county, see results firsthand, and myself and many other supporters of Joe, regardless of what the "media" feeds us all,are not concerned with outsiders who feel the media has embellished a thing or two. Imagine that...the media embellishing a story to make it more intersesting!
..reread my last post to you, sorry, didn't mean to come of so cross. Must have had a burr under my saddle. I sometimes get too passionate when defending something of importance to me. It's that darn mother bear/cub syndrome..LOL!
All I was commenting on was your "there's nothing embellished" comment prior to my first comment (who's on first? lol). I said it WAS true (for the most part). There's subtle little embellishments here and there in the story that help build this guy up a notch or two greater than Buford Pusser from the movie "Walking Tall". For the record, I'm all FOR MORE GUYS LIKE THIS! Gina asked if it was true, and all I did was give her the information that I had found...
