What is good quick aging method for whitetail deer? (teeth)? what to look for?
They had an article on how to age deer. It was issue 48
I don't think that its "nobody wants to answer your question", it is just that there is no way to explain how to age deer without illustrations, technical terms and a lot of time. It took me a long time to learn how to do this and actually went to school for this. I can tell you that a 6 month old deer will not have the last trimollar in the back of their mouth and they will have "milk teeth". The only way to age after 1 1/2 yr old is to go by the wear on the back teeth and the amount of "dentin" showing on their teeth (the brown inside the top view of the tooth. Without having a picture in front of you to compare to, you will not be able to accurately age them. Try looking it up on msn search. Good luck. Dane
Scot, look down the taxidermy.net homepage screen way down towards the bottom. It says "related links"one night I cruised through the list and found all sorts of useful and interesting things. One of which was aging your deer. Good reading !
There have been several articles on aging deer in the various taxidermy magazines. I have found a very useful tool that is called the Pocket Deer Aging Tool. It consists of digital pictures that are laminated and goes from 1 1/2 year old deer up to 8 1/2 year old deer. It was designed by a deer biologist , and I have found that it works great. With this tool you just put it beside the right side jaw bone and see what picture matches. No it is not foolproof but it does enable you to age deer like a professional without a lot of schooling. The tool was described in the next to last issue of Taxidermy Today and sells for $12.95. If you or anyone else is interested just send me an e-mail for futher information.
