Tanning Oil

I would like to know what people use tanning oils for. I tan my own with Lutan-F and just mount, no problems with it, but if I were to apply tanning oil to the hide after, would that allow more stretch, or does that just help to soften skins for rugs?

Good morning Brian,

Applying the tanning oils does several things!
#1, it will lock in the tannin's,preventing any leeching.
It will definately allow more stretch to the cape or hide.
It will prevent the mount from drying out and cracking down the road. and you're correct...the oils will help to soften your hides for all your rug work. Also, oiling replaces the proteins that were removed during the pickling process.

I hope that this info.will help you.
If your in need of more info.on this subject, Feel free to e-mail me ar call me at (1-800)843-3320 ext 105
