Smoke Damaged Deer Heads & Fish

Submitted by Tom Clark on 2/17/01. ( tclark@pinenet.com ) 204.107.143.13

I have a customer that had a recent fire at his place.
His deer heads and fish were smoke damaged. What can I use
to clean them up? Will the fish need to be repainted
or can the smoke damage just be washed off?

Thanks for any advice.

I just got done using woolite rug cleaner on one but followed up using mount brite cleaner over it. The deer came out as new as if it was just mounted.

The fish may just need to be wash with a damp cloth. Do the back side first to make sure the finish is not ruined. If it's water based to much wiping may cause some of the finish to come off. But all in all the fish should be alright. But make no guarantees till all the work is completed. You could run into problems cleaning anything.

It just may be smoked damage but you have no idea on how hot the skin got during the fire or not. You wern't there and your no sure no matter what the client tells you. It may crack and do what nots. Give a price for both and let him make the choice.
