Add a small handful of salt to your mache' then add warm water. That should speed it up for you.

I add borax when I want faster setting.
Just curious, as I usually use the slowest setting mache that I can get. Even when I do use the borax to speed it up slightly it certainly isn't fast. Use a plaster when you ned a fast setting surface, like artificial rocks. What do you need it to set fast for?
