TREAT VELVET ON AUG. DEER ?

Submitted by Patrick on 1/17/00. ( ) 63.21.17.62

I am going on a hunt this aug. at the Bostic Plantation in SC, and I need to know
what to do with the antlers(velvet). Can I take dry preserv. with me and just rub
it on to dry them out, or just let them dry on their own?I am traveling like 16 hrs.
to get there, and will not be able to freeze them for the trip home. What is the
best way to take care of the velvet so I can do a nice mount with them? Thanks
for any help in advance.

DP will not work on velvet antlers.
Antlers in velvet can be tricky. The best thing to do is to freeze
the antlers and then pack them in dry ice for the return trip. if
that is not possible, I would recommend getting one of the liquid
velvet tan solutions a quart should be enough for a 120 class buck.
you will also need a syringe and plenty of needles. you will need to
inject the solution into each of the tines and the beams. you will
need to get ALL the blood out of the antlers. The injection process will
take some time. Ultimately, I prefer to freeze dry my velvet antlers.
The last set I prepped for freeze drying took about 2 hrs.

Yoxy, You work with velvet antlers... what's your 2 cents....

Antler in Velvet Tan

You can take some Antler in Velvet Tan that Knoblochs makes
with you. All you have to do is inject the solution into the
veins of the antlers after you poke a hole in the tip of the antler.
Proceed by injecting at the base of the antler and flush to
the tip. Once finished then take and apply a generous coating
to the out side of the velvet allowing it to penetrate as well.
Then let dry and keep in a cool spot.

Knoblochs
this great feature. WHy would KEN waste time and money for it if it does not work. But it did. Plus 9 other postings were included in
the search.

Knoblochs Antler in Velvet Tan works great for me and it is easy to use.

I took in a deer this past August, the cape was ruined already, but I was able to
save the antler velvet. And these antlers were already hardened and near ready
to slip!
