Hello, A customer brought me a mule deer rack to stain.I have choc.brn and red. These colors seem too dark to me.I feel that even diluted they would not look right.Am I being to picky?could really use a more experienced opinion on this. The same guy brought me an elk rack and it turned out great!I want him to be just as pleased with the mulie. Thank You.

Barb, I've never had any luck with wood stains (aka "antler stain). I use potassium permanganate and 50/50 linseed/turpentine. Several other alternatives are listed in the archives if you give them a check. They go into great detail.

We only use woodstains. Have never had any luck with the permanganate. Sorry George. Wood stains comes in all different colors and shades. Choose the one for your antlers. Must be worked over with steel wool afterwards. We have great success with wood stains, but like George mentioned above there are other solutions. You need to find out what works best for you.

I have used oil paints for years on repos and bleached out antlers and I will attest that they can't be beat, thinned with laquer thinner and applied either with a brush or rag, then steel wool to highlight.
