I have a set of antlers that I would like to salvage for a mount. The antlers are a dirty gray in color; obviously very old! I want them to be as good as new.(perfect)I don't remember a stain I tried years a go on another rack but, it sucked; the antlers game out red and really shined. Their's no deers in the southeast with racks that look even remotely like this or with a shine like that. Please, any help will be appreciated.

I have read the archives and tried painting with latex paint and then staining them but that took alot of the detail away and I still couldnt get them to look real.I talked to a taxidermist here in town and he uses some kind of grout.Does anyone use this?Where can I get it and how do I use it or is there a better way?thanks Lloyd
I used "Early American" wood stain the other day on a set and it worked great. Wipe it on and then wipe it right off. Do this until you get the color you want. Early American is semi dark, brownish yellow. Just a thought.

Clean them with soft scrub then wipe them down with blood.when they dry pollish them on some brush outside and they will look just like natural.
You'd be simply amazed at the realms of information on recovering, staining and finishing aged antlers available in there. TRUST ME, go look.
i once spent a heck of a lot of time in this studio i once built to look like a boat and i had a lot of live reference.
i had a male and female of each specie i could find, boy did they have bugs...all kinds of bugs and more bugs than i could stand.
well one day it started to rain and then it flooded and before i knew it my studio floated away with me and those animals and the BUGS all went afloat.
man oh man let me tell you about being allergic to bugs and vermin, after forty days i had so many bumps and was i ever itchy, when we found some dry land i found a doctor who said i had developed allergies to the mold and bugs and vermin and he said i had ark hives..
That was great Its been a while since I have laughed so hard !
