dry persevative?

Submitted by darryl on 08/26/2002. ( )

i was wondering when to use dry peservative and when not too?
i see some whitetail deer mounts that are cracking around the eyes after only being a couple years old. did dry perservative cause this? should the cape of a whitetail always be tanned before mounting or can you use dry persevative and if so how do you ensure the eyes will not crack?

You are opening a can of worms here, But here is my two cents. I used D.P. when I started out. Dont use it now and dont recommend anybody to use it on anything of any size. The skin around the eyes was not fleshed right or was not oil causing it to crack.Tanning takes out the protein out and turns the hide to leather. D.P. just help keep out bugs, the hide is not changed any. You have a piece dryed raw hide.

Tell ya Dpers its not the way the skin is fleshed

I have heard that excuse for years, even done a few myself in years gone by.

Its not the fleshing, but the crappy glue or lack there of! That caused the cracking.

I can tell you how to stop it once and for all.
