Whitetail mounting?

I understand that taxidermist use several methods when preparing a deer cape before mounting. Not all of them tan their deer hides but rather use some form of preservative such as alum or other dry powdered preservative. Tanning helps to stretch a hide and perhaps gives a longer lasting mount. Does anyone out there not tan but use dry preservative on their deer mounts. What brand would you suggest since their are a few, some better than others. Do you use anything else beside dry preservative or along with it? I have seen one taxidermist do this with awesome results. But he only does this on deer shoulder mounts. Thanks

I use dp on everything. Don't have any problems as long as I use epoxy. Right now I'm using Killer Glue, but going to try the Epo-Grip epoxy as soon as it gets here. As far as dp goes, I've been using a brand that I'll get shamed off of here if I say the name. BUT in my defense, before the yelling starts, it's what I learned with and is what I have, and I didn't know about the contraversy at the time (live and learn). When it's gone I'm going to try Touchstones, I've heard it's the best. I have tried others but did not like the results. But make sure you use an epoxy or you will have shrinkage problems, I firmly believe that's the "secret" to dp mounts that last.Hope this helps. BP.
