Repairing Ear tears

Submitted by Chuck on 09/06/2002. ( cberg@cbarchery.com ) 198.107.233.26

I bought a mule deer cape and of course it has both ears torn. What is the best way to repair these..The tears are about an inch or better along the edge. I've tried sewing them but they turn out like crap.. any suggestions or would anyone like to trade me this one for one in good condition..I would be glad to pay extra of course. Its a 19 inch but I would like a 20. I'm not a pro by any means but would love some help with this.. Thanks alot for all your help. You guys and gals have helped so much in the past... Chuck

Use super glue (cryo) and back with silk span!

Chuck, The super glue will work but you have to be very careful of getting it in the hair. You can buy what is called "invisable thread" at a cloth store- Walmart has it. This is the thinnest thread and when you sew with a very fine needle you can make a repair that is pretty much- well, invisable. I use both methods but if it's a tear more than about 1/4" I sew it. Enjoy, Aaron H.

chuck,i have used the "invisible thread" for years. it's like one or two pound test monofiliment. i use it for ears all the time and i usually use a spiral stitch on long tears and then reverse the ear and use a needle to pick out trapped hairs from between the stitches.
