I was resently given an old 10 point whitetail rack,5" base and 17" spread, heavy mass. The deer was taken so long ago that nobody knows who killed it or how big the deer was. I plan to purchase a cape from a wholesaler, but i need some help on getting the right size. Most dealers give the neck size only. If anyone has any thoughts I'd be glad to hear from you.

It's all a matter of personal preference but I wouldn't want a little deer with a large rack or vice versa I would say 17" to 20" neck size on the cape should fit nice with your rack. Hope this helps a little

This helps a lot. Thanks again!
.......On where the deer was taken. A northern deer can be much larger in proportion to its rack than a southern deer. As a rule of thumb, I will use a cape slightly smaller that I think that the deer was originally. That will just make the rack look bigger. Based on your description, I would look for a cape about 7 1/2 X 18 X 21.(I'm "old school", I use the head/ neck measurement before the swell).
