I have a small question not really relating to taxidermy this time, I am very currious on making my own deer lure. and have found 1 method of making a tarsal gland scent. but i am wondering if there are any other sure fire methods besides buying store bought scents. i;m the do it yourself type lol. thanks for any responces.

This must be cheapskates week. I forgot to see if Hallmark has a special card section for you guys yet. REAL deer scents aren't MADE, they're COLLECTED from live deer. Does are injected with hormones to induce early estrous and the urine is collected through a drain and catch system. As for your scents, even a blind pig finds an acorn once in awhile, and I'm sure you'll find a few dumb deer who just have to follow their nose to your concoctian to find out what kind of nitwit would do something like that. I guess you make your own guns and cast your own bullets as well. Even Davy Crockett knew better than that.
thanks george for such an overwhelming response to an honest question. I know how people collect deer urine. What i wanted to know was if there are any other ways such as removeing the urin from the bladder of a downed deer or other ways of making a scent using tarsal.
I didnt want to know how to make myself into a typical, jackass.
Corse ya know what they say what goes around comes around. Have a good day and tell davey crocket i said hey.I guess i;m a cheepskate also for making my own deer horn knive's? and self bows ?
hell i even nap flint and make knives from that also. guess i;m just cheap. oh well such is life.

If you want to make the tarsel gland scent. Here's what you have to do. Cut the Tarsel glands off of the buck's hind legs, and put them in a nylon sock.Put them in a bottle with the urine from the buck.you
can get the urine from it's bladder.Close the bottle up,and when your ready to use it.remove the nylon and hang it near a scrape.Thats it.
good luck.

Hey Sam , I'm not much for answering questions here because "EVERYONE" is a "KNOW-IT-ALL" but this is my proven method..I carry the large syringe and "BIG" needle in a HD zip loc bag ,and an empty glass lure bottle or two in my pack , a 4 oncer is best..When the first kill happens extract the urine from buck or doe and put in the bottle ,the more the merrier.Once bottled I keep them refrigerated till I need it.This is my all season cover-up / lure..NOTHING STORE BOUGHT ABOUT IT..I spray my boots every time before entering the woods..Most deer are curious and will fallow just to see what's on the other end,its usually an arrow where I'm from..Go to a butcher shop close or during the rut and ask for their tarsal glands..I take them home and put a 6 foot piece of 80+ pound monofilament and attach it to the gland putting a loop at the end for your hand or whatever..I then coil it up and "VACUUM PACK" them individually and freeze them , I think the "VACUUM PACKING"" is the key for "FRESHNESS"..Now you have them ready to go..I take one out when I enter the woods , spray a little fresh urine on it ,now to me I'm thinking the deer will fallow it thinking he or she is fallowing a couple deer..Then as I approach my stand I go down wind a few yards scratch up a fresh home made scrape and hang that "DRAG" above the scrape about 3 / 4 feet high after I have freshened up the gland with urine..Spray a few shots of urine in the scrape , back out ,climb the tree and may you arrow do it's job..I trash the gland once used , use it more than once is pushing it.."GOOD LUCK"
Sam,
Understand completely the curiosity that causes the itch to make your own. Sure, it's not taxidermy, but I'll help you out anyway. A good source or two of instructions on how to do what you're trying to do would be either of two books. Russ Carman's "The Complete Guide to Lures and Bait" ($10) and Nick Wyshinski's "Formulating/ Compounding Animal Lures/ Baits" (7.95). Both of these books are geared toward trappers who, like many devout trappers, are interested in not going the easy route and buying what's on the store shelf, but would rather see if they can makle something better. But I think you could probably extrapolate the information you get to apply to making deer lures as far as drying/ mixing/ using tinctures to stabilize and enhance, etc. Both are available thru Schmitt Enterprises, Inc., PO Box 44, New Ulm, MN 56073-044 or by calling 507-359-4149. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much guys for the responces you;ve given they will deffenetly help. I really get amped up especially during the archery season, so i figured i would try something new as for making my own lure's and see what happens. thanks alot once again and have a good day.
dont blame you for wanting to try something different
some of those store scents are nuthing like deer lol
place a plethora of aromatic organics (pine needles, acorns, moss, leaves) into a container of alcohol and let set for a month. the concoction smells great, but the alcohol seems to spook hell out of deer.
