I would like to start with whitetail deer, all i have done is watched the videos and read the books. I was trying to get as much info as possible before i started, my question is should i just order the material and learn as i go now? any information would be much appreciated, I am very eager to start on my first deer. Thanks.

It's just like mounting a deer. All the reading and looking on in the world won't cut it until you sit down and hold the cards in your hands. Mounting deer is exactly the same. The best taxidermists in the world can't make your hands perform the "magic" theirs do and only you can create your own magic. No matter who's watching over you, you first one will always be your worst one, and you just gotta start someplace. Jump in.
Do yourself a huge favor and get yourself some kind of mounting stand before you begin sewing. Rig something up if you have to. This was a critical lesson for me when sewing up the cape; it helps if you have both hands free when sewing. The first mount is so important to get under your belt. Once it is done your confidence will go up 200% and you'll be looking to get your hands on another cape. There is no substitute for making mistakes and learning from them. Once you get hooked (and you will) join some state associations and begin competing with your work. Having your pieces judged by top artists will literally propell you to the next level. You'll surprise yourself! Lot's of luck!
Darren,
Go for it ! My first was a doe I turned into a buck. Made many mistakes but did'nt make them again.
out of two by fours, four feet tall with a 12 inch horizontal neck. put an "L bracket" on the end of the neck. used the hole in the bracket to run a screw through into the mannican back. use a support 2x4 in the angle. you could use a couple of cheap hinges and attach it to the leg of your workbench for that desirable swivel ability. I'm sure you could even think of a better settup!
