If you're only planning on caping for a shoulder mount, while field-dressing the deer do not cut too high up the chest cavity. I have seen too many capes that people cut into the brisket area. That is the area right below the neck where the fur is kind of bunched together. when you skin the deer out leave as much of the hide as possible for the taxidermist to remove. It's better to leave too much of the cape than not enough. peel the skin away from the neck area, taking caution not to put any holes in it and cut off at lower section of neck. The taxidermist needs the neck to determine size of the form to use. Do not take cape off the whole skull as this should be left for taxidermist to do. KEEP THE HEAD ON ICE! preferably frozen if you can. Good luck! shoot'em straight.
