Using a Sander

Was wondering if anyone had used a sander to help soften a deer skin that has already been tanned to be used for a rug that will hang on the wall. I am thinking of trying it to see if the vibrating action of the sander will help to soften the skin...If anyone has any input on this please let me know....Thanks in advance.....Lisa

here is a way to soften the TOUGHEST hide - it doesn't matter if it is tanned or you have just let it dried out - get the sandpaper that they use to sand and refinish hardwood floors - it is COARSE! - it will break down the toughest of skins in a hurry - even by hand - i have used this method on small mammals all the way up to deer - i have had fox skins limp enough to be used as a wash cloth - this method is not for mounting the skin - just displaying the skin with fur on
