Hair Slipping

Submitted by Fred on 01/12/2003. ( )

I got a cape back thursday form being wet tanned. I took it out of the freezer Friday night to mount Saturday. I did the ears and prep work in the morning then Mounted it. Now I notice hair coming out when ever I touch the cape like when I try to groom the air patterns. Is there anything I can do or will it get better when it starts drying? Any help would be great.

Also what would you recommend for a hide paste? I know Epo-Grip is good but I dont think I am fast enough for that type of adhesive.

Fred, there is no way for anyone to guess about the cape.

Do you have any Litmus paper, check the skins pH if you do?

It could tighten up, with the aid of a fan and Epo-Grip Hide Adhesive you might make it work.

With Epo-Grip you dont mix enough for the mount in one step.

You mix just enough mount the antler, ear and top of the head.
Then do the same for the face, lips, nose, eyes, jaws and throat areas.

Once they are adjusted, mix enought to do the rest of the mount and finish it up.

The Urethane seems to find its way into the skin.

Once you have it stapled up the back, put a fan on it, turn the head upside down after 12 hours. The liquids in the skin will shift to the lower levels, (law of lividity)

Change head and head down every 12 hours, you may be able to save the cape. this way.

If the cape is high on pH and you have some pickling acid, I would mix some pickle upi and give it a good dunking.
