interlock antlers

Submitted by sherri on 01/14/2003. ( )

I received a pair of wt bucks with their antlers interlocked. They are locked pretty tight. Their heads where cut off about 12 inches below the ears. These bucks are pretty nice. A 9 and a 10 point with nice bases. My question is, what would be the best way to work these up? I've been doing Taxi work for about a year, and have never ran into this before. I know I'll need new capes. But what would be the best way to mount these? I wouldn't think you would want to unlock them, I don't know if you even could. Cutting the antlers from the skull to mounting is what I need to know. The foreheads are right up against one another. What would I need to do in that case? And what about the forms needed. Will I need to do form altering or could I find forms for this very subject? All the info would be really great. Thanks so much. Sherri ps This will be a challange?! I want to do a very good job.

Locked Deer

Sherri, Whatever you do don't "unlock" those antlers! It is indeed a challenge but you can remove the old skin and saw skull plates without seperating them and you can mount new capes to the racks as they are. I remember at least one posting on this which you can find in the search (at left). When you saw the skulls just saw through the bottom jaw and on up till you come out the top then probably you will need to cut from the front to the rear to release the skull plate. You will have to be extra careful of all of those tines and the saw blade. Somebody has a couple of forms for this (maybe Van Dykes?)but I would say you would certainly have to alter whatever you find at least a little. Sounds like a great project-enjoy!--Aaron H.

A suggestion . . .

I would suggest that before you cut the skulls, take some photos of the racks showing exactly how they are locked together. I have found in the past that sometimes when you cut the skulls it will allow the antlers to come apart very easily.

The photos will let you re-orient the antlers the way they were.

Good luck!

Thankyou for the help. I am looking forward to this project! Was thinking of doing either ped. or maybe even life size if I can find lifesize hides. Again, Thanks. Sherri
