I'm on my third whitetail mount and read about "sealing" the nose with a fungicide sealer prior to painting. If my cape was properly tanned is this a necessary step? thanks.

No, It's not necessary.
It depends on what you are doing to the nose. consider this; Suppose you do not seal the skin and you do some finish work using epoxy. if you smooth out the epoxy with water the skin will slightly re-hydrate and swell. the epoxy will harden in a few hours and not shrink. the skin may shrink when it dries,leaving hairline cracks. If all you are doing is mod-podging the nose mm is correct and sealing probably is not necessary.
