Salt

Submitted by Bojack on 06/02/2003. ( ) 24.204.105.88

O.K. I have been doing taxidermy for about 9 years now. For 9 years I have been buying salt in the grocery store in the small containers like you buy for home use. I want to start buying it from the feed store but I need to know what kind I need to get. Is it livestock salt or what? I dont think the bags say non-iodized. Can someone please lead me out of the dark on this. The people at the grocery store think I have a bad addiction to salt.
Thanks,
Bojack

The bleeding hearts will whine when I tell you to check the archives, but there ARE some great sources listed there. And Bruce Rittel told us "salt is salt". The iodized will only effect your work if you're looking for white leather and not the possible iodine stain. Best place to find good FINE salt is your local bakery. I buy it for about $10 for a BIG bag.

We buy it by the two ton loads...twice a year. We buy from a bakery/food distributor. We pay about 4.18 per 50lb bag, and this price is by the bag or by the ton. Buy a ton and they will deliver..otherwise the little Ranger seems to sag coming home.

Fine mixing salt from the local Farm, feed store.

80 pound bag is $3.50 or a 50 pound bag @ $2.89. this is a very fine grained salt.

Pottasium chloride will also work and does not harm the grass.

Is the salt that you are getting about the same as table salt? Texture wise? I am still trying to find the Bakers Salt that I encountered in South Africa. It has the texture of flour.

Food grade salt

My feed store has salt in 50lb bags that is marked "Food Grade Salt" I don't think it is iodized as it does not say so. It is cheap, about 4 or 5 dollars a bag. It looks and feels just like salt from the store.

If there is a TSC or farm supply store near you, go and find "fine stock salt". $3.50 for #50. Works well for prepping capes and tanning. You'll feel silly for buying the little containers for so long. Been there, done that. Peace- Jeff F.

Go to a feed store and ask them for "FEEDER SALT" it is used to mix with catle feed along with other animals. It's about $5 for a 50 lbs bag. As for it being non-iodized I think it is. I used it to tan a deer hide and the deer hide turned white. Ohh, yes ask them for the "white" salt. The brown salt has different minerals added to it that might discolor the hide/cape. Hope this helps. Have a nice day. MichelleW

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all the help. I'm tired of all the weird looks at the grocery store.
