an old wound. I've seen some that had dark hair growing in the area of an old wound/bald spot on the back of deer.

On horses, many times they will grow white hair over an old wound, such as saddle sores.

That's my guess...maybe someone out there knows for sure...

That's like being almost pregnant

A melanistic animal has the reverse genetic flaws that albinism manifests, Anon. I suspect, as Vicki stated that this is a malady of sorts OR, which is entirely possible, his melanism is only visible in a single area. Many have dark faces or black highlights instead of being totally black. I once compared it to a comparison of piebald deer, but learned that piebalds geneticism is more of a physical deformity that can be passed along to succeeding generations where melansim and albinism USUALLY is not but remains recessive for 3 to 5 more generations.

Where in the US can you "get" a deer in June other than pay for it on a fenced farm?

I "get them in" all year long. Some guys just think they beat next years rush if they put it in the freezer in November and wait till August to bring it to the shop. Then again, maybe that's why he was "anon". LOL
