chin gland?

Could someone tell me the correct name for the gland located on the lower jaw of a whitetail (between the throat and the chin)where those long hairs grow from?

It's not a gland, I don't think

Simply chin whiskers much akin to the same ones located around the muzzle.

Gland

I think it is a gland and some judges feel for it in competition. It's just a little bump under those long white hairs that come out below the jaw. Thanks anyway.

Well

Who am I to argue with a judge? LMAO. Leonard Lee Rue lists only four major glands in a deers anatomy: Preorbital, interdigital, tarsal, and metatarsal. He lists 2 minor glands as being in the forehead area and the tail. It certainly has no lymph attachment and it can be cleaned around easily as any other whisker or the eye lashes and brows. Some deer don't have them either, so does that mean lost points? I'll trust old Leonard over some taxidermy judge any day. (Unless it's Bill Yox, of course. LMAO)

I hope not!

I would agree that LLR III is the authority on WT deer and if that is what he states then I believe him. I have been hearing it referred to as a gland in some of the critiques I've gotten through the years. What ever it is, some judges check for it in competition. Thanks for the input.

My Theory

Like a cat's whiskers, that tell it the width of the opening that it is putting it's head in, the hair under the chin of the deer tells it(by contact) that there is something under it's head. Predators are unlikely to attack the deer from underneath, so the eyes are located to tell the deer where the predators are likely to come from. This hair follicle(s) is enlarged to provide for the growth of a stiffer and longer hair(s). You will notice that the hair is not hollow like the normal deer hair. It may be a bit larger than other hair follicles because it is supplied with better innervation to perform it's function. Just speculation on my part, take it for what it's worth.

Interesting question, by the way. Some might also say that a judge that is too interested in this detail should, "get a life".

sounds good to me

Thanks for the replies. For all intents and purposes let's refer to it as Jennifer from now on. I'll include it with my notes to the judge. "Please take note of the Jennifer bump that has been carefully sculpted in below the chin!" lol

You will notice that this THING is sculpted in some of the MEDER forms, though.

that thing...

is indeed a FOLLICLE. Old fart and George are both correct. Along with the follicles that hold those whiskers (there should be 4 very close together as 2 sets of 2) theres also two more on the side of the face on the masseter, one in the middle and one much lower nearer to the jawline. They are very sensitive, just like the eye orbit whiskers and muzzle whiskers.

You want a nice gland to talk about? How about the brow, thats a large subaceous gland. See you guys didnt need me OR Lenny Rue!
