I skinned out a eight pt buck the other day and its neck measurement was 17".(hair measurement)
I measuredthe meat and it was 131/2". If you were going to mount this deer would you order a 17" neck form or a 131/2" ?
I have mounted a few deer in the past and always used the hair measurement, but they were a little tight going on but once you got them in place they fit alright.
If you used the 131\2" measurement wouldnt the mounts neck be way smaller than you would need to make the proper size deer. In useing the hair measurement I would always gain a little on the neck size a 1" or so.
any help would be appreciated.

Brian before you do anything wait till it's tanned. Get your measurements for the tanned hide. This way you'll be able to get good stretch from it and then order the form.
....What you took out! If you put a form that is the same size as the carcas you will not have a deer that is smaller than the original. The skin should not fit snug. If you don't believe that, then the next time you skin a deer head, take the skin that you just took off the carcas and put it back on the head. Does it fit snug?
The reason that a deer head looks small is because the hair is slicked down when it is groomed. When the form is the "proper" size you can groom the deer with the hair fluffed up and it will stay. Try it when the cape fits "snug" and the hair will not fluff up.
That was the best ways to explain this. Simple and direct. Good post!
Remember, When you skin the neck and head out, you still will not get an accurate measurement by measuring the neck meat unless all of it is still on the carcass! Most of the time it isn't, that is what you are fleshing off the hide!Go with Frank. Have it tanned, then rehydrate, and stretch it out as best as you can, measure it and then order your form. You will be guaranteed an excellent fit!
