Measuring after thawing

I am new to taxidermy and I am going to mount my first deer. I have a cape that is skinned off the skull and frozen. After thawing the cape, should I stretch before taking c measurement. My concern is since the cape has not been tanned, will I lose any hair pulling on it when I stretch?

Tan the hide first, get it wet tanned. From there take your mesurements and order the form you need. Yes you can measure a raw hide with ease but being new to this I would wait to make sure of myself.
Next time measure the meat on the head to get your measurements. This way it's more certain you get what you need from that.
