Help with competition eyes!

Submitted by Mike on 10/27/2003. ( ) 63.160.130.147

I will be entering the professional division soon. Somebody please tell me how to shape the eye lids, third eye lid, nic. membrane. Do you use apoxy or clay? Does the nic. membrane sold by McKenzie work well? I have searched archives and can not find an answer. Thanks for any help. I will be entering a whitetail deer.

It is hard to describe the shape, but reference phots are the key, get plenty of up close pictures of a live deer eye and it will help. I use clay on the inside (next to the form)to have something to tuck the eyelid and shape it. I use apoxy a couple of weeks later to finish the outside of the eye. As far as the nicatading membrane...I have always made my own out of apoxy.

Buy an eye with the nictating membrane already attached to the eye. They're avaiable through Joe Coombs. Jeff F.

I would go with the Joe Coombs eye if you aren't sure what to do. It is a very nice eye to use.

Maybe it's a little too soon for you to enter the Pro Division if you are not sure about this eye problem?

I have won blue ribbons in the commerical divsion and I am very familiar very deer anaotomy. I am a reference junkie. I even steal from doctor offices.I just want to know how most rebuild the area. my customer mounts are detailed with clay ,a real third eye lid,and the nic. membrane is rebuild with apoxie. This turns out very nice.I do think it is time go to the pro level. thanks in advance.

I was thinking about you today while caping out a whitetail.(and my hand) Next time you're caping, The nictating membrame will probobly be on the eye after cape removal. Study the angle and the coloration. The McKenzie is a pretty good match in anatomical correctness. I'm still studying this myself for precise sets in mounts. Try it! Might help. Jeff F.
