Salt-Freeze-Salt?

Submitted by Mick on 10/02/2003. ( ) 205.186.87.53

Hello again, I have had a few elk come in and I have them salted. I am going out of town for 5 days and the capes have had only 24 hrs in the salt. Of course they are not finished salting so my question is: Can I freeze the salted capes now, then thaw them when I get home and proceed as usual?

Thanks

NO!

It's in the archives, but why would you even consider that? Salt is working. Dump the old salt and resalt and let hang to drip. The hide will have sufficient salt in two saltings to dry the hide and protect it properly anyway.

You may want to put a fan on them.

I would resalt, not stacking the capes on top of each other) then last thing put a fan on them and leave.

Thanks Guys

Thanks for the responses. I questioned the elk because they seem to take longer to dry. Thanks again.
