Freezer Burn and hair slippage

Submitted by Nokes on 10/09/2003. ( ) 12.2.195.135

I have searched the archives without much sucess. My question is: can freezer burn cause hair slippage. A customer has brought me 2 deer with the heads still on that have been in the freezer since last year and were not covered very well. Upon caping I have found that the head skin is still pliable but about half of the thickness of the hide has the look of freezer burn. I understand that the major cause of slippage is bacteria, so if I have these wet tanned will a little freezer burn cause slippage? Thanks

the way you usually would, salt it, and don't worry about the freezer burnt skin (it's dry) pickle after one salting and it works great, just get it in the pickle within 24 hours. If it stinks then use stop rot ( or green and funky ). John
