Fluffing up deer hair

OK, I was reading a past post from this month, and someone mentioned you should fluff the hair on the mount. I thought the hair on a deer laid relatively flat? I have mounted two deer now, and on each one I brushed the hair flat. Is that incorrect? I haven't found any other posts on fluffing deer hair, or have seen anything mentioned in the videos I have.

So what would the procedure be once the mount is finished for grooming the hair?

It is not just fluffing the hair, its stacking the hide.

Deer are like other animals, the have to have fluffy hair to survive the harse cold weather. Slick hair has little insulating ability.

The slick hair is shed in the fall just a few days ago here and happens very fast.

The thick winter hair is coming on and looks almost like velvet. Then it get a little long and is for the most part almost hollow.

In the northern tier of states and through Kansas where deer hunting can be life threatening, deer have some huge long and thick hair, there is not anyway it could lay flat.

Southern states not getting nearly as cold, the deer still put on a winter coat, but its not near as heavy as the northern strain.

It even varies from where I am in my home state to the southern part of the state. we have several nero and sub zero days here while in the south, seldom does it drops below 20-30 and those are few in number.

Work as much hide up on the deer as you can, it eliminates drumming, and makes a fuller looking deer mount.
