Deer feet

Question?....I have a box of about 1/2 dozen deerfeet that have been packaged in what looks like borax for a few years. They have been positioned for a gun rack. Can I soak the feet to soften them up for skinning or will the water ruin them? Thanks.

Mike , deer feet are a dime a dozen . Why would you even want to bother with something like this . If they weren't skinned out but were just dried , their garbage . It would probably take days to soften these up and then the hair would fall out anyway . Get yourself some new ones . I throw away about a 1000 a year . Rick

Or You Could......

Mike, Rick is indeed right- most every deer killed has 4 of them so the feet are not hard to come by, BUT I would say there is a good chance the feet could be skinable. I think: simply soak them in borax water in a cool place like a refrigerator. It will take a good long while but they will eventually soften. If they are ruined already the hair will likely slip, if they were quickly dried they likely can be salvaged. Like Rick said you could get fresh feet to start with and that's what I would probably do but then you could embrace this as a learning experience. Either way- enjoy, Aaron H.
