Thats the best way to mount it. Learn that and you'll do fine. And I'd hold off on other peoples trophies until you figure that out. Good Luck. Jeff F.

All of the taxidermy suppliers have books and videos available. You might ask some of the experts on here which ones are good. I have the Breakthrough Whitetail taxidermy manual which is good and I am sure there are many others. Also you might try your local library. Some of them do have books on taxidermy.
Good luck

In addition to books, videos, etc. (and the various schools), one of the BEST (if not THE best) investments you may make is to attend and compete in the various State, Regional, National, and World competitions and seminars. You may watch World Champion taxidermists mount specimens in some of the seminars. In others, you may learn how to create great habitats, general design, business, finish/detail work, tanning...the list goes on and on. The cost is extremely reasonable. You'll leave with a wealth of information and inspired to apply the knowledge!
Enjoy! :)
FROM BEHIND ......HAHAHHAA

Sure you can keep a large chunk of cash in your pocket by doing it yourself. It will in 99% of the cases be mediocor at best. Good luck.
Or you can pay a taxidermist to do it for you and get many years of experience that have gained.
Lastly, you can have me mount your deerhead and YOU watch everything from start to finish, film the event and have both the trophy and reference for future use for only $845.00.
Yes I will let you learn close to 30 years of experience for that one low price.
Good luck

Mutiple techniques for ears, nose, paste lips, paint etc.
I think you are looking for standards for quality
1. Field care field care . keep it cool dry clean and frozen asap if you wont be working on it right away. Anything frozen will need to be sealed airtight to prevent freezer burn.
2. Flesh the eyes nose lip ears and cape thoroughly. thin and clean. period
3. Tanning. send it out or follow directions on your home "tan"
4. Form prep and size. dremmel out that nostril, set your eyes or prep the pre set eye
5. use good glue/paste. especially around the face and antler burs
6. Asseble and keep your hair out of the stitches
Within that there are 1000 ways to mount a deer. Read the archives and search topics here on ears eyes lips noses stitches forms etc. watcha few videos, have fun and watch your work improve. One big thing- is the fleshing and siubsequent salting. All starts with the dirty work. Good luck
Yours is way to broad a question son. It's like asking a mechanic "what is the best way to overhaul an engine?" But you are on your way since you've done one deer already and you are on this site. This is just one way to learn as you go. Visit this site and ask smaller questions as you go and read other guys questions and answers too. Collectively you've gained a big chunk of useful suggestions and information just in this question alone right? Also you can research the archives for any questions you may have. Happy Thanksgiving fella!
