Hello,
I have a set of Whitetail antlers with, say, 6-8" of attached skull that I would like to mount myself. My question is how do I clean the inside portion of the skull? I would prefer not to boil it and possibly (though I'm not sure if it is recommended) to preserve the attached hair on the outside of the skull.
Thanks,
Rick

When I get something like that that needs
a bit of cleaning up I get a hammer & chisel
and i eventually get everything clean
then you need to cut the corners off maybe
what I do Is I get a tin can and draw a circle on a piece
of 3/4" plywood cut this out & screw antlers on to It
Now you got to reInforce everything with staples or
small nails...mix out some poly filler I usually mix with saw dust to make It stretch further mix out a stiff batch & start modeling It around the horns until you make a very nice base..you can wet a table knife to help you here...let It set up for a day then get sand paper and smooth It out..then cover with stretchable material
this takes practise to get good at It there Is nothing like watching someone else do It you'll never forget..then you can get some rope braid and put around horns...screw to beautiful panel..hope this helps
I think your talking about a horn mount? If so all you need to do is soak them until the flesh gets soft then get off as much as possible. Get a nice panel and then screw the skull plate in place and paper mache around it to shape it and cover with felt or leather. Jack F
